In 1879, the building that is now the home of The Burton Street Foundation, opened as Langsett Road School. After years of being a popular community school, the site was eventually scheduled for demolition in 1995, leaving the long-standing building in peril. The Sheffield community soon stood in and took over the building, which is where the Burton Street Foundation began.

Fast forward to present day and the Burton Street Foundation now run 5 buildings across 3 sites with an array of services, events and facilities.

 

“It’s a pretty big organisation now, but Burton Street is still run on a not-for-profit basis, and it never lost its soul. That’s what makes it the special and unique place it is.”

 

A community food member with FareShare Yorkshire for 4 years, Burton Street receive an array of items with their orders. Once it’s in their hands, it makes its way into the kitchen, ready to be turned into delicious meals.

Jenean Kirk, Hospitality Manager at Burton Street Foundation, said;

“Our volunteers get the chance to help preparing the meals, before enjoying them in our dedicated café. We make hot meals daily for everyone, some clients and volunteers have disabilities so it’s great that they can learn some skills in the kitchen. Being a CFM at FareShare Yorkshire minimises food waste and gives vulnerable adults who come to Burton Street the opportunity to sample different types of food that they may have never had the opportunity to try. It’s an excellent project.”
